A clinically structured adult fitness program designed for those with specific medical needs. In partnership with your referring physician, certified exercise instructors will develop for you a complete fitness program, while monitoring your vital signs, program and progress.
Recommended for individuals with exercise limitations due to medical conditions (i.e. hypertension, cardiovascular and lung disease, diabetes, arthritis, orthopedic injury, etc.) Progress reports provided to your clinician. Physician referral required.

The YMCA Personal Trainers are ready to help your child get moving. It's never too early for exercise to make a positive difference in a child's life. Regular physical activity is important for facilitating weight control, strengthening bones and improving self-esteem and cardiovascular risk factors. These programs promote cardiovascular conditioning, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and a healthy lifestyle. Our Youth program focuses on general fitness and is designed for those 8-12 years old, while the Teen program address general fitness while focusing on general strength training and is designed for teens 13-17 years old. Incorporated within the Teen program are "classroom" sessions geared toward formally educating the teens on basic human anatomy, exercise concepts and terms. Both programs are focused on fun, fitness and education and cover a variety of fitness/wellness aspects.

aerobic exercise

A combination of high and low impact aerobics for all levels. Instructor demonstrates different modifications for low-impact (one foot on floor at all times) and high impact (both feet off the floor as in jumping jacks or jogging). May include floor and/or weight work.
power walk
A brisk 3-mile walk around downtown Smithfield area. Class meets at the YMCA to warm up the legs and stretch prior to the walk.
salsa, dance
Learn the basic steps and variations of the merenge, rhumba, salsa, cha cha and more. This type of dance is an excellent way to increase your flexibility, coordination, total body strength, release stress and improve cardiovascular fitness.

Muscular Strength & Range of Movement. Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement and activity for daily living skills. Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles and a ball are offered for resistance; and a chair is used for seated and/or standing support.

Body Recall is a lifetime fitness program for the mature adult that utilizes movements that make life pleasurable. The mechanics of everyday activities such as walking, climbing and descending stairs, sitting and standing are explored fully. The exercises stimulate circulation and increase strength and flexibility. Body Recall movements are possible for all people regardless of physical limitations, such as arthritis, heart disease, and diabetes. (10 week sessions)
seniorcise
A low-impact, low-intensity exercise class designed for the older adult. Each class is 50 minutes and includes movements that promote joint flexibility, range of motion, muscle strengthening and cardiovascular conditioning.

A basic low intensity, Hi/Low impact step aerobics class. This class will teach you all the basic steps and give you a great cardiovascular workout. Easy to follow and ideal for beginners.

A moderate to high intensity, low impact workout using the step to improve cardiovascular fitness. Each class includes a warm-up, approximately 45 minutes of aerobic exercise, a cool down and an abdominal segment ending with a full body stretch.
step & sculpt
A total body workout, this class is a moderate to high intensity, low impact workout using the step to improve cardiovascular fitness with intervals of strength training incorporated throughout the class.
step interval
Alternating segments of resistance work and step program to provide full body fitness training. A fast paced class with knowledge of step required.
strength/conditioning
body design
Sculpt your body using stability balls, bands, bars or weights. This class will focus on core strength, balance and coordination using a variety of techniques including exercises from aerobics, pilates and yoga. Good for all fitness levels.
body sculpting
A total body strength training class. This workout utilizes free weights, rubber tubes, a bench & the floor to get the most out of your muscles.
powercut
This strength training group exercise program is performed to music using plate-loaded bars and offers many health benefits, including: a toned and sculpted appearance, decreased body fat, improved posture and alignment, improved bone density, improved mobility and stability, improved functional living, and improved body fitness and symmetry.
resist-a-ball
A fun challenging total body workout using the Resist-A-Ball.
stretch, tone, and strengthening
An excellent class for those starting an exercise program, emphasizing proper stretching and strengthening techniques.

Cardiovascular and strength training in the water.
multi-train
Incorporates cardiovascular conditioning, strength training and flexibility training using a variety of mediums. Both intervals and circuits may be used.

A nontraditional class incorporating the stability ball for total body conditioning with special emphasis on balance, flexibility and core strength.
body balance class
Low-impact group fitness that incorporates weight training, balance and core stability movement to improve fitness & flexibility. Friendly and fun class setting uses stability balls and other equipment to positively impact health.
