a message from our president and ceo
Dear YMCA friends and supporters:
We’ve all read the headlines that over 60% of the Peninsula population is overweight or obese. Nationally, childhood obesity has increased 31% since 1995. This health challenge has been brought about by a myriad of factors – the most evident being physical inactivity and unhealthy eating. Our YMCA has joined Ys across the country to Activate America® by transforming the way we work to support all health seekers and their communities in the pursuit of health and wellbeing.
In 2007 our YMCA launched Membership For All. Targeting health-seeking children, youth, adults and families we created an income-based sliding scale for monthly dues to open our doors even wider and encourage every health seeker in our community to have the Y in their life. We defined a YMCA membership in terms of relationship, engagement, support and involvement.
We have created gathering places in our branches to encourage and facilitate family interaction and refocused our programs to support families through friendly schedules and family activity time. We served 26,149 youth this year in after school and preschool child care programs and 10,983 children participated in YMCA camping programs. We served 150,424 in all family programs.
Volunteerism is the foundation of our YMCA and we are committed to having volunteer opportunities to help foster building better relationships both inside our YMCA buildings and in the communities we serve. In 2007 2,026 individual volunteers made time to have the Y in their life and in the process, worked over 34,000 hours.
The Peninsula Metropolitan YMCA has initiated a scholarship through our Endowment Fund to honor Nicole White who was one of the thirty-two Virginia Tech students who died on April 16, 2007. Nicole was a lifeguard for the Luter Family YMCA in Smithfield and volunteered many hours each week both for the YMCA and for various organizations in her community. The scholarship will be presented each spring to one senior at Smithfield High School who best exemplifies the qualities, volunteer spirit and leadership of Nicole while she was a student at both Smithfield High School and Virginia Tech. Through her acts of love and generosity, Nicole R. White will forever leave a lasting legacy.
In 2007 the Peninsula Metropolitan YMCA served over 50,000 members and provided programs that teach and model the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility to more than 483,950 participants.
As we look to 2008, we will continue to find even more ways to reach out to health seekers. Our hope is for everyone to enjoy all the benefits and opportunities available when you have the YMCA in your life.
Sincerely,
Frank A. Edgar Jr., President
