Before- and After-School Care

Because . . .

HELP AFTER SCHOOL BENEFITS ME IN SCHOOL

The YMCA Before and After School (School-Age) program is a great way for kids to start & end the day.

Whether you need before-school, after-school or both, the Y provides a safe place for kids to spend time with other kids so their parents can work without worrying. Some of our School-Age programs are held at local schools, but for those held at the Y; we provide transportation to and from the Y to your child’s school.

  • Our counselors are all CPR certified and receive specialized training so they know ‘the Y way’ of providing the quality child care children deserve and parents expect. The YMCA School-Age program provides an environment where children can easily make friends, be part of a group, meet physical challenges, and know they are liked, respected and appreciated. Please download a copy of our School-Age Parent Handbook.

Children in YMCA Before- and After-School programs enjoy:

HTG Girl Jumping Rope  HEALTH

Solutions to childhood obesity, lack of physical activity and food insecurity require difficult lifestyle changes. Teaching healthy habits is at the heart of how the Y supports the development of healthy lifestyle choices.

  • 5210 helps combat childhood obesity by educating and encouraging children and their families to eat healthy and be active. We support 5 fruits and vegetables daily, 2 hours or less of screen time, 1 hour of physical activity and 0 sugary drinks.
  • SPARK involves children in highly active, staff-led activities using individual, partner and small group learning. SPARK supports the Virginia Physical Education Standards.
  • Healthy Eating & Physical Activity (HEPA) standards are followed by providing 30 minutes of outside play, parent education materials, limited screen time except for homework sessions, healthy snacks, and access to water at all times.

 LEARNING

The YMCA Enrichment plan is designed to weave reading together with fun activities in a seamless manner so that children work on improving their reading skills without realizing the underlying intent of the activity.

  • Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM)-We advance youth’s skills to observe, question, plan, investigate, analyze and communicate findings through real world, hands-on projects.
  • Arts & Humanities-Through clubs and projects, children get hands-on experiential learning through themed activities that enhance skills and creativity.
  • Homework and Reading Time-Our staff are actively working with children during homework time by providing an environment of learning and instilling the love of reading. Library partnerships, book lending and story time is scheduled.
  • Character Development-Our character development lessons are based on the core values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith.

HTG Life Preserver  WATER SAFETY

Water accidents are a leading cause of serious injury for kids.

Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death in children ages 1 – 14. The Y offers the opportunity for youth to participate in swim lessons and other aquatic programs to help them be confident and safe in and around water.

  •  Swim Lessons (available at select branches)

HTG Children Circle  SAFE SPACES

Outside of school, youth don’t always have a safe place to play. The Y provides that space.

Creating safe spaces at the Y begins with the hiring process and continues during employment. To keep children in our programs safe, our YMCA partners with Praesidium a national leader in creating save environments for kids. This partnership gives us access to tools and resources to provide a safe environment. Praesidium’s Safety Equation is a standard for hiring and continuing safe practices that includes screening and selection, training, monitoring and supervision, internal feedback systems, policies, consumer participation, responding and administrative practices which equal a safe environment.
