Because . . .
I CAN MAKE MY WORLD BETTER
The Y is a powerful association of men, women and children joined together by a shared commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility. We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors.
Together, we use our knowledge to develop stronger, more integrated communities, provide support for people and families, and promote positive change overall.
Each YMCA strives to meet the needs of their own local community. YMCA staff, volunteers, visitors, community leaders and board members listen for and report those needs that might further our cause to strengthen communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
Some of the community needs we currently address are:
Social Preparedness for School – YMCA Bright Beginnings is a community outreach program that provides children in need with the new clothes and school supplies needed to start the school year with confidence and excitement. Now they can concentrate on learning and making friends and look forward to each school day. More…
Childhood Obesity – At the Y, we’re committed to children’s healthy development and well-being. Drowning Prevention – Drowning is the second-leading cause of accidental death among children in the State of Virginia; one minute is all it takes for a child to drown. The Y works with local school systems to teach all second grade students how to be safe in the water. More…
