Children’s author-illustrator presents to after school programs
On Thursday, March 21 children’s author and illustrator Michelle Nelson-Schmidt gave a motivational presentation to children from the Northern Neck Family YMCA and the Boys and Girls Club of the Northern Neck after school programs.
According to Tom Martin, YMCA Community Development Specialist, Nelson-Schmidt told the assembled children about her creative writing and illustration process. She recounted how the stories originated from her imaginative mind and caring heart. She also exhibited artwork from her books and shared how her artistic talent took years of school and practice to refine.
The engaged children sat before Nelson-Schmidt in the YMCA gym, captivated by her message of exploring your passions and following your dreams. The author-illustrator cautioned them the path might not always be easy or successful but she encouraged them to make a pinkie promise to always do their best through hard work and perseverance.
At the end of Nelson-Schmidt’s presentation, each child was given the opportunity to take home an autographed copy of either “Jonathan James and the Whatif Monster” or “Cordelia and the Whale.” The books were made available through public and private donations.
Nelson-Schmidt has six published books to her credit with four more books to the way. When not engaged in creative process, she travels sharing her motivational message with children. To date, she has been to over 800 schools in 39 states and talked to about a million children.
