Learning to swim starts early in a community surrounded by water
When asked why it was important for the Northern Neck Family YMCA to offer the Parent/Child Swim lessons, instructor Mark Favazza said, “The class introduces infants and toddlers to the water and allows them to be comfortable in an aquatic environment. It also helps parents understand how to interact with their child in the water to create a safe environment.” Favazza then added, “All children, especially in our water-surrounded community, deserve to have the best opportunity to be safe. This class provides that opportunity.”
The parent’s participating in the course echoed Favazza’s comments. Daniel and Kate Armstrong, who take part with their one-year old twins Jack and William, said, “Living in this area, being comfortable in the water is important for their children’s confidence.” They explained the lessons gave them peace of mind that their children would be safe. The Armstrong’s also noted, “We spend a lot of time on the water and it is important that their children know how to swim.”
Parent Katie Howlett stated, “During the summer, our family is always out on the water. It’s important for our son Cooper to be comfortable around the water so he can enjoy it as well.”
Stephanie Spurlock said, “We live on the water so it’s important for Avery to be confident and respectful of the water. These lessons will teach her that.” Then referring to the new aquatics center, Spurlock added, “I’m excited about the new facilities.”
The YMCA offers many classes to help children develop swimming skills, safety awareness, and personal confidence. In addition to the Parent/Child class for infants and toddlers, the YMCA provides Preschool Swim Lesson Classes to help children learn water safety and basic swimming techniques. The third class offering is Youth Swim Lessons, which focuses on increasing stamina, endurance, speed, form, and confidence.
The classes are offered in 2, 4, and 8-week formats. Please contact the Northern Neck Family YMCA at 804-435-0223 for date, time, and cost information. These classes take part in the Guardian Program and financial help may be available.
