3 Steps for Achieving Your Philanthropic Goals

The warmth and joy of the holiday season is over, daylight is in short supply and chilly temperatures have set in. Winter has come, and it might not seem like peak season for anything except binge watching the latest Netflix series.

Yet some things thrive in winter. Broccoli, for example. The cooler days of these months are peak season for the tree-like vegetable. It’s also a prime time of year when many of us focus on what’s important in our lives and set goals for what we want to achieve in the coming months.

If increasing your family’s charitableness or getting involved with The Peninsula Metropolitan YMCA is a goal you’ve set this year, but you’re not sure how to get the ball rolling, here are three ways you can get started.

  1. Identify your passions. Who are the people or what are the causes you want to support? Is it a food pantry down the street, your local animal shelter or a refugee in a camp halfway around the world? Then identify the organizations that you feel do the greatest good.
  2. Think about your impact. What does your support look like? Is it volunteering with your family? A one-time or annual cash donation? A planned gift that you establish now but give in the future? Make an honest assessment of the commitment that feels right for you, factoring in your family’s financial priorities and values.
  3. Put your plan in action. Now it’s time to make your impact a reality. Contact the organizations that you want to help to start a conversation about how you can make a meaningful difference to the causes that are important in your life.
